Moose Collision Claims in Anchorage
Direct Access to Two Attorneys After an Alaska Wildlife Collision
Michaela Kelley Canterbury and Christopher Canterbury work together on every motor vehicle injury case, giving Anchorage drivers and passengers direct access to both attorneys throughout the claim. At Kelley & Canterbury, we investigate how a moose collision happened, address insurance issues, and prepare evidence to support your position.
We’re a family-owned personal injury law firm that has represented injured Alaskans since 1975. Michaela and Chris each have more than 30 years of legal experience. We handle motor vehicle collision claims and complex disputes involving insurance coverage and bad faith, which is an insurer’s unreasonable denial or delay of a valid claim.
Moose crashes are a distinct hazard on Alaska roads. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game reports that, per mile driven, Alaska has one of the world’s highest rates of moose-vehicle collisions. The department estimates that moose cause more than 800 crashes statewide each year, though the actual number may be higher because some collisions aren’t reported.
Darkness and season both matter. Alaska transportation research indicates that nearly three-quarters of moose-vehicle accidents occur during hours of darkness. A 2023 Alaska study also found that collisions were 5.7 times more frequent from December through February than during the least collision-prone period in late spring.

What to Do After an Anchorage Moose Collision
Take these steps after the crash when it’s safe to do so:
- Call 911 and seek appropriate medical attention.
- Exchange contact and insurance information with the other people involved.
- Obtain witness details.
- Photograph the vehicles and roadway.
- Preserve records of your injuries and expenses.
- Don’t admit fault, particularly when the full sequence of events isn’t yet clear.
Officers may not respond when reported property damage doesn’t exceed $2,000. If an officer can’t arrive promptly, use photos and video to document vehicle positions, damage, lighting, weather, road conditions, skid marks, debris, and the surrounding area when it’s safe to do so.
Notify your insurer after the crash, but consider speaking with a lawyer before giving a recorded statement. We handle insurance company communications and negotiations for our clients, including requests for information and disputes over how a collision occurred.
Which Insurance Coverage May Apply?
The answer depends on the policy language and the crash facts. Comprehensive coverage typically addresses vehicle damage caused by striking an animal, subject to the applicable deductible and exclusions. It doesn’t automatically establish coverage for every injury-related loss.
Collision coverage commonly applies when a driver swerves to avoid a moose and strikes another vehicle or object. Uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage may also become relevant if another driver’s negligence contributed to the crash and that person has no insurance or insufficient limits. We review the available policies before taking a position on coverage.
Developing Crash Evidence
We prepare each file with a trial-ready mindset. This can include gathering physical evidence, interviewing witnesses, reviewing medical documentation, and organizing records for negotiations or court. Evidence from the scene can be especially important when the parties disagree about visibility, speed, evasive action, or the order of impacts.
