Alaska Post-Accident Action Plan: What to Do After a Crash

Be Prepared for the Unexpected: Your Post-Accident Action Plan (Free Download)

The best time to plan for a crisis is before it happens. Keep this step-by-step plan handy in your glove box and phone so you’re ready when seconds matter.

The Action Plan

  • Don’t go it alone: Call 911—even if injuries aren’t obvious. Let EMTs assess and request police documentation.
  • Document everything: Use your phone for photos/video of vehicles, surroundings, visible injuries, insurance cards, and the people involved. Gather witness names and contact information.
  • Report promptly: Notify your own insurer.
  • See a doctor quickly: Mention the specific incident that caused the injury (car crash, slip/fall, etc.).
  • Often on extra-slippery days, high call volume will prevent police from responding to your accident, especially if you “feel fine”, so file your report online and keep a copy of your report.
  • Work notes: If you must miss work, get a doctor’s note.
  • Save records: Keep receipts, correspondence, paystubs, and all medical paperwork together.
