A winter guide for hosts and guests
Short days, less exercise, and a full house can stretch everyone’s patience, dogs included. Here is a calm, two-perspective approach that keeps gatherings friendly and safe.
For dog owners and hosts
Routine first: feed and walk before guests arrive.
Set a space: a quiet room or crate with water and a favorite bed.
Rules at the door: no crowding small kids, no rushing the entry, and supervised interactions when energy runs high.
Share the plan: tell guests how your dog prefers to be greeted or when it is better not to.
For guests
Ask before you pet and follow the owner’s guidance.
Teach kids to give space and to use “closed hands, calm bodies.”
If the dog is resting, let resting dogs rest.
If a dog bite happens
Provide first aid and seek medical care.
Photograph the injury and the area where it occurred.
Gather witness names and contact info.
The injured person should report the incident to the dog owner’s homeowner insurer; the owner should also notify their carrier.
Review what to document on our Dog Bite page and check the FAQ before speaking with any insurer.
